The Theale Good Camping Factor!
If you’ve wanted to try Scout Family Camping then take a good look at how 1st Theale & Calcot do it and you’ll be on to a winner!
Last June the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts asked their parents, carers, brother and sisters to come camping at Rushall Farm in rural Berkshire for a night. It had all the traditional elements of Scout camping we have come to expect such as camp fires, sing songs, eating outdoors and making friends, however this one had a particularly “Piratity” feel to it (and a lot more besides.)
If your Cub or Beaver wasn’t scaling climbing walls, firing arrows, learning to rifle shoot or painting a target, then they were exploring in the wild woods, investigating what was hidden in a chalk wall, making camp fire cakes, hunting for treasure or building a rather therapeutic Willow Shelter.
Over 130 people turned up to camp and everyone pitched in to help pitch tents, we all had enough room around us with a meadow on one side and the shade of the woods on the other. We all ate together in a street party sort of fashion and thankfully the weather was (mostly) kind! Some of us even found a forgotten inner Scout and sang campfire songs through the smoke, between marshmallow warming and hot chocolate drinking!
The marshmallow game will live long in our memories and our First Camping Chubby Bunny Champion, Alfie R triumphed with 11 to be the winner! What will we manage this time I wonder?
It was brilliantly organised and there were some lovely detailed touches to the event including; the flag ceremonies, the training certificate presentations, a Skull & Crossbones camp blanket badge as well as the unfortunate hung parrot swinging from the Camp Welcome sign to name just a few.
It goes without saying that “Great Times” like these don’t just happen all by themselves, the team behind this fantastic success story brought to life an idea which was turned into the stuff of Pirate Treasured memories. A huge THANK YOU!
** The planning is now starting for this year’s Family Camp. If you have an urge to get involved, don’t stop there – GET IN TOUCH! We’d love you to be part of the team, bring your ideas, your improvement suggestions and a little enthusiasm and goodness knows what we’ll be doing to top it! Email [email protected] if you want to play a part or tell your child’s leader. **
. This year’s Family Camp is at Cricket Campsite,
Bursledon, Hampshire from 28-30 June.

Weekly Update
HI All
There is quite a lot of info in here this week if everyone can take a large breath and read to the endJ
Next Exec meeting 6th June 8pm venue TBA
Next Leaders & Camp meeting 13th June 8pm venue TBA
Camp Actions;
I have attached these but most important points are as follows:
Booking forms for leaders and their families- I need these by the end of the week please if you haven’t handed them in already, I am happy to collect if you need me to.
Van – Jo & Paul are talking to 80th and B&S but do continue asking parents etc.
Deposits – any outstanding deposit money to be paid in ASAP.
Group Members:
(Message from Jo)
I’ve attached the spreadsheet showing our members, however, this does NOT mean they are CRB cleared!
I suggest that you look on the camp list and then our Group list – if you have parents NOT showing on there, they are definitely not CRB cleared with Scouts. If your parents are showing on there, their CRB status may well be pending. (I’ve checked and this is the case with one of my parents).
ACTION:
I think in the first instance, could each section leader check the parents they feel are theirs on Scouts.org. (Go to member’s area, my tools, member search, type name and look at disclosure tab)
Can you please send Jackie back details of the ones you have checked so she knows who is checked, who is cleared and who is not! Karen Shenton may well have forms at home missing information that she has not chased on or where info was sent in but has been missed so we cannot assume this is moving along just fine.
If someone cannot do this – please can you let Jackie know and we can work something out urgently.
Section Expenses;
There have been some questions on this (as we knew there would be). Keeping it as simple as possible – the section pays for ALL section specific stuff; lodge woggles, prize bears, patrol badges, craft, well done certificates, investiture certificates, prizes, food, activities.
The Group pays for badges (through badge secretary and Group badges), rent, equipment for shared use, insurance, uniform for leaders (if they request it)
Keep asking questions if unclear. Thanks.
Uniform Badges:
Small point but 2012 Olympic and Jubilee badges were for 2012 only and should be removed from uniform.
Group Accident Form
We talked about this at the leader’s meeting. Please share any comments with Jo at the next leader’s meeting.
And finally.....
For the social evening on 30th May at the Red Lion they have offered to lay on a hot buffet of Curry/Chilli etc with side dishes (generous portions promisedJ) for £10 per head. If you would be interested please let me know or if you would prefer just come for a drink and play/watch the skittles action let me know your preference.
All the best,
Jackie Dean
SCOUT SHOP:
When you buy for your section or any parent visits,www.readingscoutandguideshop.co.uk . Avoid john Lewis and the like as we sadly get nothing..
** KEEP THE RECEIPT! Please pass any receipts to your Leader so the group can claim 10% back on any purchases made.
COMMUNICATIONS;
